It’s really not that hard. The last 2 people I taught stalled it less than 10 times each before being proficient enough to drive on the road. Do your part for the car community; help save the manual and teach a friend

When this one dies. It’s relatively healthy-ish now. I’ve tracked my car and it’s been driven hard, but it’s still good.

Did it. I convinced a friend and his GF (neither of whom had ever even sat in a manual-transmission car before) to buy a manual YJ Wrangler, came with them to pick it up, drove it off, and taught them both to drive manual in it that afternoon. They drove it home on their own that night.
It’s been a few months since, and they love the Jeep and driving manual. He loves the inherent gamification (i.e. “How perfect can I make the next up/downshift?” ) and she loves the cool factor ( “I can drive MANUAL now!” ).
Their Jeep is also orange...

Probably if you lean them towards the stalling rather than riding. It ll be fine. They’ll just be jerky shifting and stalling sometimes to get it down to the sweeter spots. Its better than teaching them to ride the clutch and working into more bite from there.

Only 1 of my friends was rough on it. I figure my normal mountain drives are worse for it. Plus, it’s a brainwashing scheme. Every friend I’ve taught got out saying “I need to buy a stick shift, cars can actually be a lot of fun”

I actually don’t really think that would help. I just explain to them the basic principles behind what they’re doing, and go one step at a time. All you can do is be patient and remember how bad you were on your first time.

No one would teach me, but one had the gall to be critical about a couple bumps and jerks after I taught myself and had only been driving for 3 days. I’d gladly teach anyone who asked me...except my sister. She can learn in her husband’s ancient paid-off cheap-to-fix Saturn.

As much as I would love to save the manuals I tried with my brother’s car and him teaching and it was pretty hard. For several reasons: 1) I don’t really know the proper steps. I could row up the gears but and lost in the down to stop part because he never really explained it and I never went out my way to figure that out. 2) I am short so in his 240 I have to tip toe in order to engage clutch the entire way. 3) I don’t work that well in panic situations and he decided to teach me on a street with stop signs, street lights and other cars driving by. I didn’t stall but after 5 minutes I have up. Anyways still up to give it another try someday but definitely not with him. One day though, I will help save the manuals!

I’ve taught 9 so far. honestly, at this point, I already have the $2200 necessary for a stage 2 clutch in the bank account, so I’m just waiting for this one to go fuck itself, and let me get more power In there
